Channel O awards. The Rundown; A personal account
So the Channel O Awards came and went, leaving a bad taste on EVERYONE'S tongues.
First off, as with most events in S.A, the awards ceremony started late. After having being told that my VIP tickets were at the front desk, I had a bit of an embarrassing situation with people not finding my name or my ticket on their list. Without my tickets, I did the sensible thing and walked right past burly security guards and bouncers, and set about trying to find the person responsible for making sure that I had tickets. In my quest to find what I (much later) found out was the VIP desk, I landed up in the dressing rooms of the artists!! After spending some time with D'banj and his chilled out producer Don Jazzy; Crazy Lu of Jozi; Samini; Nameless; and a host of other artists, I set out to look for the rumoured "VIP DESK". After looking in all sorts of nooks and crannies of the City Hall building in downtown Jozi, I found the desk in the bowels of the building. There was a ridiculously long queue of VIP's trying to get their passes and tags! Not being one to queue, I went straight to the front of the desk and lo and behold my passes were nowhere to be found!! Media and VIP's STILL hadn't got their passes by the time the event started!
MTV Africa chart - 10/04
What a difference a month makes in what constitutes the best African music videos?
Sasha aka Nigeria's Missy Elliott has good staying power, as she has been on the countdown for over a month without much progress though. It seems Southern Africa continues to dominate on the countdown, with South Africa replacing Angola as the nation with the most music videos. Freshlyground is already on the countdown with their first single of the Ma'cheri album called Pot belly.
It seems South African men are taking to the rhythm and blues genre pretty well. After being dominated by Kwaito, House, Afro-pop and Reggae, Loyiso and Tumi are leading the surge of male crooners.
See the previous countdown here for the Adara music video by Sasha.
To the countdown,
10 Siphokazi (South Africa) - Amacala
9 Tumi (South Africa) - Give me you
8 Buraka Som Sistema ft Petty (Angola) - Wawaba (V1.8)
MTV Africa Chart - 08/24
I am sure you have watched various African music videos within the last week. Do you know what the top current African music videos are though? MTV has a countdown of the hottest videos coming from the continent. We featured one previous countdown sometime back, how time changes. DJ Jimmy Jatt, the previous chart buster is nowhere to be found
Angolan videos are the highest rated this week, give it up for Lusophone Africa :-)
Nhlanha, of the famous Mafikizolo, makes an appearance on the countdown and apparently even though this is a solo song, she and Theo are still together as a group. Nigeria's Missy Elliot aka Sasha also makes an appearance, as well as Bongo's new cover girl, K-lynn. The females are repping hard on this one. Eben Entertainment from Gabon is also represented through Vanessa S, Koba and Baponga.
To the countdown,
10 Nhlanha (South Africa) - Ungowami
9 Koba ft Vanessa S, Baponga (Gabon) - Tu n'as rien compris (remix)
8 K-Lynn (Tanzania) - Crazy over you
MTV Base Africa chart - 08/21
And we're back!!!
After a long hiatus, we bring you the MTV Base Chart for the hottest videos on your African televisions.
One very interesting observation about this week's chart is the fact that there is not a single song from Anglophone Africa. A lot of people characterise MTV as an English Channel, and one that was going to support music in English and music from young, hip and upcoming African musicians. The musicians from Angola, Congo DRC and Mali on the countdown are young and hip, but they sing in Portuguese and French. The other African musicians have to step their game up :-)
The top placed African musician on the countdown is Mokobe (of 113 fame) from Mali with C'est dans la jolie featuring Patson.
here is the current chart
10 Young Jeezy ft R. Kelly - Go Getta
9 Kaysha (DR Congo) - On Est Ensemble
