We are enjoying this awards season very much. We've gone through Ghana, South Africa, many Nigerian ones, Sierra Leone and we are awaiting the winners in Uganda and Namibia. You can click the countries to see the winners from each country. We can't leave out Kenya and when you talk about the land of genge, benga, kapuka and boomba music, the Kisima Music Awards is the biggest show. It rewards mostly Kenyan musicians as well as those from Uganda and Tanzania. East Africa unite! The show would be held on 29th November.
According to the Kisima website, The General public within East Africa votes through the Mobile phone by SMS to a short code number and Internet for the regions without access to the short code. I didn't even know there was anything like Urban Fusion music in Kenya till this year.
I'll vote for Marion Shako and Eric Wainaina to win these awards. Maybe Nyota Ndogo may beat out Marion. For Urban Fusion group, while Pentamony is quite good and I've heard a couple of the tracks, this award has to go to Just A Band. Those guys are entertaining. Read this interview lol
Webuye Jua Kali is a great group but Onyi Papa J has been really popular with their Raila Odm song, so I'll go with the later for the ETHNIC FUSION ARTISTE/GROUP award. Marion Shako and A.star for the gospel awards. Hey, A-Star is gunning for multiple Kora Awards as well. I'll vote for Eternal MCs for the best gospel group.
I don't know much about the Benga artistes but I do know about Deux Vultures of 'Adhiambo' fame. That was a hot song. They'll win Benga group and the benga artiste is a toss-up. Hotty for BOOMBA FEMALE ARTISTE and newcomer Mejja for BOOMBA MALE ARTISTE in a closely contested category. I won't be surprised if Jua Cali or Nameless took this though. 2008 is the year of P-Unit, I expect them to take BOOMBA GROUP.
S.T.L is the truth, that lady is great and obviously her stay abroad has helped her. But watch out for Wiwy. I'll love for Wiwy to win this one though - hip hop female . Is Baby Gangsta (Tasha) actually Kenyan? I'll vote her boo, Abbas for best Hip hop male. Ukoo Fulani - Burn dem for best hip hop group.
Wahu is nominated for best reggae. Can her competitors' fans out-vote hers? I doubt. I vote M.O.G - Zing Zing for best ragga. TRADITIONAL ARTIST/GROUP - Webuye Jua Cali - Tindikiti, ENSEMBLE - vote Wakenya Pamoja.
Nakudata already took the prize at the PAM Award song of the year prize and I believe it will win at the Kisimas too. Bugumu wins best video
Mr. Politician is running for MTV Africa's best radio hit but will it win in the Kisimas? I feel Matonya's Anita will win Tanzania's song of the year. A-Y and Mwana Fa win best video.
I think Wakenya Pamoja should win best songwriter. Jua Cali, Pam, Lenny &others win for social responsibility and in a very tough category, best collaboration goes to
Juliana & Bushoke for Usiende Mbali.
The song of the year in Kenya has to be 'Sweet love' by Wahu. Video of the year goes to Jimmi Gait for Muhadhara. The most promising artiste would be Kenrazy. Best male in East Africa goes to Matonya, while best female goes to Juliana Kanyomozi. Best group goes to P.Unit.
