Welcome back the Kenyacal with 'God Dey'

Lord Kenya Kenyacal God deyLord Kenya is one of Ghana's most foremost rappers. He's been in the game for almost 10 years and was one of the hiplifers who helped hiplife break into the limelight. He was the first one to win the most coveted award at the Ghana Music Awards and for a long time, was on top. After being displaced at the top, he is out with a bang with his seventh album. He was 'born again' in 2006, two years on, the 'Kenyacal' wants to tell everyone that 'God dey'.

What is the 'Kenyacal'? According to Abraham Akpor, someone who makes music is musicial. Someone who writes/has good lyrics is lyrical. Someone who raps is (a) Kenyacal. Those are some pretty strong words and I don't think Kenya addresses why this must be the case in his current single, Spedede. We know Lord Kenya is one of the fathers of hiplife but for him to prance around saying he is the be-all of rappers is a stretch. Maybe if he said it in 2002, we'll have rapped it along with him, but now?

Lord Kenya's latest album, God dey, has 14 tracks and is dedicated to the important role God is playing in his life. It has various styles, including Twi-pop, highlife, Afro rock, hip-hop, slow tempo, jazz, etc. Twi-pop, according to Lord Kenya, should be the real name for hiplife. Hiplife is in a mid-life crisis, most of the artistes don't know if they are doing hiplife still and others are criticizing them for not doing it right (raglife, jamalife, urbanlife, etc). We'll be bringing you some of the tracks in due time, Museke.com fans

Spedede is the first single and other than defining the Kenyacal talks about how Lord Kenya is highly respected in the Ghanaian music scene. He deserves it for how he churned hit after hit back in the day. He even featured Ofori Amponsah, Kofi B and Barosky on one song. 'God dey' features Screwface, that will be something to behold. There is also a remix of Mr. POP. Check the lyrics of the original out here. Other songs include Ladies (with Kwabena Kwabena), Adonko (Daasebre Dwamena and Swazy B), Solja, Abrabo, Forget, Pure Love (adepa), etc. Why is it that we only hear of Swazy B when Lord Kenya is in the news? Is the brother working on his own album or music is not his daily bread?

Condolences to Lord Kenya on losing his daughter Maame Akua Boahemaa Kenya in February. The 'God dey' album was dedicated to her. Kenya has been doing this for a decade now and still going strong and I believe he will stay in the limelight as long as he does this. I mean, come on now, he IS the KENYACAL.
