Nigeria Music Awards Winners 2008

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

There are a ton of music award shows all over Africa these days. The Nigeria Music Awards held over the weekend in Imo State claims to be the official awards ceremony in the wake of countless ceremonies around - Nigerian awards in UK, USA, other organized by Hip Hop World, Soundcity among others. We will need to see continuity in this NMA's to christen it the official one. (There is also the AMEN awards)

Here are the winners anyway, watch this space for more information

Nigerian Artiste of the Year Award: P-Square
The other nominees were Asa, Timaya, Olu Maintain and D'banj. I also wonder what calendar years these judges use but I can't argue with this choice, P-Square is hot right now. But so is 9ice as well.

Album of the Year Award: Grass 2 Grace by 2face Idibia
I am a huge TuFace fan and his last album was excellent so I would hardly argue. It left in its wake the most recent albums by Asa, P-Square, Timaya and Olu Maintain. Asa would have been a worthy winner as well.

Song of the Year award : Yahooze by Olu Maintain
As our latest poll on Museke.com indicates, Yahooze is probably the biggest song out of Africa for the past year. No argument here. It beat out Do me by P-Square, Lori le by X-Project, Nda Chineke by Ugo Stevenson and Fire on the mountain by Asa.

R&B Song of the Year Award: 2face Idibia
Which song is it? True love or If Love is a crime? Either is a worthy winner.

Best New Artiste Male: 9ice
That's my boy! He'll win more awards in the future

Best Female Artiste of the Year: T.Y Bello
It's interesting how she won over Asa and Kween.

Best Higlife Artiste of the Year: Nda Chineke by Ugo Stevenson
I had never heard about Ugo and I didn't think highlife was a popular genre in Nigeria anyway. Maybe Ugo is helping change that.

Best Gospel Artiste of the Year: Sammy Okposo
I have to listen to some more Sammy Okposo because I don't find him 'that good'.

Best Traditional Gospel Artiste: Paul Nwokocha
I know little about these kinds of artistes in Naija. Someone help?

Best Male Voice: Djinee
I totally agree. His new songs Come sun, come rain and I no dey shame are excellent.

Best Female Voice: Lara George
Checked her out recently, she's good.

Best Record of the Year: P-Square
I believe this was for Do me. No one like you is a great song as well.

Best Hip Hop Song: X-Project
Is X-Project a hip hop group? Is hip-hop defined differently in Nigeria now?

Best Rap Artiste: Ruggedman
Ruggedman has been the most consistent Nigerian rapper for a while now.

Best Fuji: Dekunle Fuji
No lele is a buriful song.

Best Reggae: Faze
I guess they just wanted to give Faze an award. He was unlucky to lose out earlier.

Best Dancehall: Timaya
Everybody call me Timaya, just because I am getting higher! Timaya is one to watch.

Congrats to all the winners
