I was quite shockprised to find out that Styl-Plus had made a song like Iya Basira. The song is not really R&B, it's not really rap, but it does sound African. Iya Basira talks about how someone has gotten into trouble with his girlfriend and mother because he has substituted their cooking for Iya basira's - the classic roadside kiosk chopbar. They have caught Iya basira's spell and their lives are a mess as a result. Eating at chopbars is a pastime for many Africans and popular social spot.
Iya basira is on Styl-Plus' Expressions album. This is bound to be one of Africa's biggest albums of 2006 with hits like Imagine that, Drives me crazy, Ima, Hadiza, Mase, Always on my mind, Home within my heart, etc. Imagine that is my favourite and I also really like, Mase, which is in Yoruba. Styl-Plus is presently made up of Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, and Zeal Onyecheme. This follows the success of the Runaway album which had Olufunmi, Call my name and Stay Alive, a song about HIV-AIDS.
There have been many hit songs about food, drinks, etc in Africa. Yvonne Chaka Chaka's African beer (Umqombothi) was a continental hit and ended up on the Hotel Rwanda soundtrack. Buk Bak entered the Ghana music scene with Komi ke kena; which basically means kenkey and fish. They scored another chart-topper in 2000 with their song, Kelewele which didn't really talk about food. Ofori Amponsah made a hit song out of Sardine, Deeba had Abenkwan (palm nut soup), people seemed to enjoy Lucky Mensah's story of how monkeys like bananas (Aduu sumo akwadu) and Brofre nie (here is a pineapple), Castro's Sradenam (meat) talked about gold diggers,, Felix Owusu says the food is ready in Waben (it has finished cooking) and Obour's Palmwine talked about the changing of the guard from palmwine, to burger highlife to hiplife. Other songs include Papa Shee's Atadwe, Virgin Pozo's Boo no ede (the food is nice), Nkasei's Monkey Chop banana and 2Toff's Tsofi and Oblayoo. E.T. Mensah, known as the king of highlife made a song called 'Don't mind your wife' which has an interesting story about wives, food and chopbars.
In the meantime, I am off to look for the African delicacies that have found their way to our ghetto blasters and discmen.

Africans love food haha
lol, Asiedu can you blame us?
The food is too goooooooood!
Gotta make songs abt it too :-)
Iya basira is an excellent song
I really have to visit an African restaurant soon, I just can't get the same 'u know' from my kitchen

i really like that song
your fans
...they go so well together. I love cooking to Faze's album, or to Mafikizolo too. hehehe
Anyway, what is your favorite food from your country / any country in Africa? tell us how to make it!
Gosh, me, where do I start. I really love Pap -- synonymous with fufu, ugali, sadza, etc. Love to eat it with chicken stew and peanut spinach. MMMM. I also love Braai-ed (cooked on an open fire outside) borewors (very popular across Southern Africa). And Dombolo, which is made from maize. I love steamed sweet potato with tea in the morning, and Im also a sucker for Ligusha, which is a type of Okra that grows everywhere in Swaziland, cooked with baking soda, onions, tomatoes and Aromat (a popular seasoned salt). Nothing else added!
I really enjoy Kenkey, fried fish and shito (Ghana) when my friends cook it for me, Gari with sugar and milk, jollof rice, fried plantains (west africa) and matooke (uganda).
And apparently you're not a real African Queen unless you can make a full meal on a 3 legged pot on an open fire with smoke in your eyes. hehe, me is working on it :-)

Some of those songs are not necessarily talking about food. Case in point 2Toff's tsofi
But Tsofi is food right? It is fried turkey or so. I love it so much, especially the ones they sell in Nsawam.
What is the Tsofi song about?
