    Suzan Agbor

Suzan, born January 5, 1980 was one of eight children born to her parents who were both Pastors of the Methodist Church in Cameroon. My mom was the leader of the Womens Gospel Choir and she would take me along for rehearsals, says Suzan. Although I could not memorize the words, my soprano voice and rhythm was present. I was so proud to be in the group, says Suzan, who was five at the time. It was her interest in singing that led the leaders of the church to form a childrens choir

At age 11, Suzan joined her school choir and eventually led them to win many competitions.

Verse
Everytime I am with you baby
I feel the magic in your arms
That sunlight on your bed
Tell me where I had to go
I can see it in your eyes
As for me, I am almost lost
For you surely I'll go crazy

Chorus
C'est bon
When I look into your eyes
C'est bon
When I look into your heart
C'est bon
We can make it through the skies
C'est bon
We can make it if we try (make it through the skies)

    Wes Madiko

Wes Madiko is a Camerounian musician. He is probably best known among Western audiences for In Youpendi, a song from The Lion King II soundtrack, as well as work with Deep Forest and his own 1997 hit Alane.

He first saw the light of day under the baobab tree in Moutaba, which lies some hundred miles away from the city of Douala, Cameroon. From the tender age of two, his grandfather taught him about healing music and how to play the kalimba instrument. The pair soon became inseparable.

Sampling African music - Soul Makossa

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •

Soul Makossa Cameroun Manu DibangoThere have been many instances where African musicians have sampled popular American songs. The sampling gets done so blatantly that you could call some songs 'Thriller in Swahili', 'Amazing Grace in Zulu' and 'Unleash the dragon in Twi'. One popular remix or sampling is that of Banky W's Ebute metta which was also first known as the Nigerian remix of Rihanna's Umbrella. People may complain about the lack of originality of these African musicians but maybe they will care to know that Manu Dibango's Soul Makossa is part of the backbone for Rihanna's worldwide hit - Please don't stop the music. "Mama-se, mama-sa, mama-ma-ko-ssa" (mamase mamase mamakusa) is that line that has kept dance floors going since 1972.

African music meets China - Assiko and coupe decale

Africa meet China.
African music meet Chinese. :-D

A couple of years ago, a friend showed me a video of a Chinese man singing Makossa songs. Zhen Ping Liu, popularly known as Liu de Karmer to his fans was the first ever and lone Chinese Makossa singer.
The name of the song is Assiko chinois, pretty good :-). Some friends joked that he probably wasn't him singing the song and someone else was doing voice over, but who really does that these days?

Busy nurturing from the nile from genocide
To sit and watch as darkness prevails
Fighting fire with fire
To sit and watch as darkness
Darkness prevails
Child soldiers on the rise everywhere
Conflict and confrontation is the order of the day
Ethnic centric sentiments behind us
Fast forward Africa
And let's catch that train now

Africa, Africa, bue w'ani
Look into the future
Africa, Africa, bue w'ani
There is a place for you in the future, I say
Africa, Africa, bue w'ani
