East African collaborations - maybe the federation is coming to us soon
If you haven't heard that Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania are planning to become one political entity soon, make sure to google it or ask someone from those countries. With the unrest in Kenya, right now, it may take a while but the plan is in the works. Maybe a new government, Raila Odinga's, would come into power and put that proposition that Mwai Kibaki championed to rest, but in the meantime, we can have some unity in music. Various East African musicians have been pushing the unity for awhile and it is working.

Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) awards 2007 winners - Uganda
The Pearl of Africa Music Awards came off last Saturday at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. Ronald Mayinja of the Eagles production was the night's big winner, winning the artiste of the year award, as well as best band single, song of the year and album of the year. He beat out MTV award nominee Jose Chameleone and the incumbent PAM best artiste, Bobi Wine.
Sophia Nantogo also won Best female artiste award. Bebe Cool didn't disappoint, continuing his good run from the Channel O awards, picking up the Best Male Artiste.
Ringo Madlingozi performed four songs including Sondela. The big award winner, Ronald Mayinja also performed as well as Sophie Nantongo. Maybe it was a sign they were going to get those awards. Bobi Wine and Nubian Lee also performed Abalungi Balumya while the former sent the crowd crazy with his Kiwani hit. Other performers were Bebe Cool, Annet Nandujja, Kamungolo, Kalikwan, Sweet Kid and Toolman.

D'Banj is the 2007 MTV Best African Act
After weeks of debating and voting for the MTV Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards, we finally have a winner. D'Banj, da koko master from Nigeria, edged out Samini (Ghana), Jose Chameleone (Uganda), Hip Hop Pantsula (South Africa) and Jua Cali (Kenya) for the award at the ceremony held at OlympiaHalle in Munich, Germany on Novermber 1. He succeeds South Africa's Freshlyground in what may be the biggest award an African musician could win these days and countryman Tuface Idibia who won the maiden edition in 2005. Congratulations to Oladapo Oyebanjo aka Skibanj.
Nominees for MTV Best African Act 2007
UPDATED
D'BANJ WINS
The nominees for one of the biggest awards an African musician could get these days is out. One of the following, Uganda's Jose Chameleone, South Africa's HHP, Kenya's Jua Cali, Nigeria's D'banj and Ghana's Samini, will be named as the best African Act at the MTV Europe awards at the beginning of November. Freshlyground from South Africa won the award last year after Tuface Idibia had won the very first one in 2005.
All five nominations are well-deserved, they have been among the biggest musicians in their respective countries and had countless hits. I think this award is for work done mostly in 2006, because I don't believe any of them released an album this year. I don't think any of the nominees stands out among the rest so it is hard for me to choose a favorite. Voting is involved so I guess I have to reveal who I'll vote for eh.
