MTV has unveiled the nominees for the Listener’s Choice Award at the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (MAMAs). The awards celebrate the tracks and artists who triumphed on the radio airwaves in 2007/8.

It has been 13 years and still counting of solid presenting and radio listeners in Accra and beyond will attest to her capabilities of keeping listeners entranced for the duration of her brunch time program on Joy Fm. Now with her being on board the Stars of the Future Music Reality TV series as the third Judge, Doreen Andoh is set to captivate TV audiences with her witty and humorous personality.

Well, that may be harsh. But is hiplife dying? Listen closely to prime time radio, the airplay is dominated by gospel, highlife and 'new school' type music. For a few weeks in the year, there were no 'hiplife' songs on the major chart shows. Not even Kwaw Kese's Odiem. Some pundits argue that Kwaw Kese is the only surviving hiplife artiste. Not the major one o, the only surviving. What happened to hiplife?

The major factor that drives airplay in Ghana these days is money. If you want to circulate your music video (whether shot by Phamous People, Ohenemedia or by your own camcorder), you have to pay for it. Judging by CD sales, you'll want to be conservative with how much rotation you pay for. It is worse for radio promotion. Deejays 'collect' 1 million cedis (more than $100) to play a song on air. There are over 50 stations in the Accra and Kumasi municipalities alone, each with a number of DJS. Do the math and see how much constant spinning a Ghanaian musician can afford.

As reported 4 months ago, MTVBase introduced a TRL radio show in Kenya by way of Capital FM. It was going to be a weekly 2-hour radio show makes its debut on Capital FM on 3 August 2007. Museke brings you the latest countdown, what music is hot and popular in Kenya these days.

This music includes music from all over the world, and like in many chart shows across Africa, American music dominates. The Kenyan musicians on the countdown are Nonini, Abbas, Jua Cali (who was in the running for the best African musician at the MTV Europe music Awards) and Amani. Here is the countdown of the top 20 songs.

So after getting excited by NeezBuck's hot Letter to Ghana track with Derek Diggs (Stars of the Future Season 1 fame), I wanted more tracks on which he featured on. One was Heated up by Irene and Jane, which has a pretty nice video and is getting great airplay in Ghana. He also gave me a track he and Derek Diggs (K.O) did with Tinny (one of the more established Ghanaian musicians) called 'The way you wind'. I listened to track a number of times but I wasn't feeling that track as much as the other two but I felt it had the potential to sell. I never heard the song on Ghanaian radio but I heard a song strikingly similar also by Tinny featuring Samini. It didn't only get airplay, its video has been praised far and wide and is making waves on MTVBase Africa.
