My first K'Naan concert experience - watch out for his new album

K'Naan dusty foot philosopher somalia mogadishu african hip-hopK'Naan Warsame is one of my favorite rappers. His lyrics are deep, on point, conscious, and real. He combines spoken word artistry with African rhythms and his life experiences. He has gone through a lot and he sums it up in one line - "If I rhymed about home and got descriptive, I'll make 50 Cent look like Limp Bizkit".

Yesterday, I attended my first K'Naan concert. I am not done seeing K'Naan perform because the energy he and his band bring on stage and to the crowd is something music fans want again and again. My friends and I got to the club (where he was going to be performing) around 11 but he didn't show up on stage until 12 midnight. The DJ played some good tunes to keep the crowd dancing but personally I would have rather sat somewhere and listened to some K'Naan tunes in anticipation of his performance. Hearing lines like "I'm so sick my rhyme book throws a fit/ I need a vaccination just so I can spit my own shit" (from African way) have to be better than trying to have a good time while waiting for K'Naan to show up.

Verse 1
I take it home
I take ....
Don't think about it, just take it from my rule, it's done
I am sick about it
I feel like I am surviving alone
I got a record and I am not afraid of cops at all
I am like a Ja-Rule poster, cuz I am off the wall
Yo, basically the revolution is here
K'Naan and Mwafrika, there's no solution and fair
Yeap, I'm taking it back like clothes that don't fit
That you purchased in a happy-make-home and old shit
I'm so sick my rhyme book throws a fit
I need a vaccination just so I can spit my own shit
Hard to be, when I release these rhymes

Yiiiiaaaoowww!
*breathing*

So - lyrics from museke.com
In the beginning there was hum from a poet whose pulse fell
Drum drum drum!
He would perform prayers and all till one day he heard a voice call
Come come come!
Suspicious he moved with vicious caution
Dismisses, he thinks it's a little off
People get held back by the voice inside them

Yo -
The voice said I'm poised to speak inside you
Rejoice and please let me invite you
To evil, greed and lies too

Yeah -
Confusing day

K'Naan and his collaborations

K'Naan has done a lot of collaborations. These include Mos Def, DeaD prez and Damian Marley on his Welcome to Jamrock tour session. He also collaborated with a certain Swahili rapper on one of my favorite songs, the African Way.

A lot of these musicians are cast in the conscious hip hop mold. He's breaking out and it would do justice for publicizing his music more. That's why I was excited to find out about this collaboration he did with Nelly Furtado.
Check out this video of a studio performace on "Going Away" with one of the hottest musicians today, Nelly Furtado

Verse 1
So good things come to those who wait
Sure
I've waited about - pop, pop, pop, pop
That's four cousins shot!
I got grudges, let's discuss this
My music needs no touch ups
I got a long record of fuck ups, trust me
You don't know a past as weird as mine
Or a life as hard as mine
I had to hustle, chop, sell drugs, grind
Whatever you want to call it is fine, but just listen
And don't prejudge
I don't want anyone dissmissing me as another thug or some shit like that
No sir, if I fall I will get right back
I got circumstances, but let me stop dancing around the

Verse 1
It's like writing to the dead
Dear people, i dont know if youll hear my last plea
But somebody needs to be concerned about me
It's like im standing on the edge of a high tower by kanie
Y'all are rootin me to jump, nobody stopping me
It's like a drug filled rock n roll documentary
Just wait till the world knows what's inside of me
Cuz you'll be sorry when im gone
and I'll be gone so very soon
f the pressure on my diaphragm keeps resisting
If the feds keep my brothers stomping up and down prisons
If you cant understand my offerings and deep mission
No label

Verse 1
Consider, configure the shit that I'm in
And the pain, I'm literally going insane
I'm frightened, my heart and my head and I've been fighting
I'm certain, it's hurting the rest of my body
Them voices are loud as Manhattan come from chatting
They say, Anderson let us
And they know you better than all these

Kids trust no one cuz fire burn them
Refugees die in boats headed for peace

A poor black ghetto child
He can’t shoot and he can't go run them out
There’s no school and the kids go runnin wild

He’s so cold, and the po po hate em all
He ain't seen his daddy since back in ‘84
But oh well so it be, now he's in jail
His mothers stressin just to get him out
