Makoma

Tagged:

Makoma is a gospel group from the Democratic Republic of Congo. It consists of 3 brothers and 3 sisters from the same family and the seventh member is a friend. The group members are Nathalie Makoma (lead singer), Annie Makoma, Pengani Makoma, Tutala Makoma, Duma Makoma, Martin Makoma, and Patrick Badine. Annie is a tailor who plays a leading role in the design of most of the group's stage attire, and Martin doubles up as the group's choreographer. They sing in English and Lingala.

They started performing as a group in 1995 as a group called Nouveau Testament. Upon relocating to Holland, they became Makoma. They attend the Bima Church in Rotterdam. Mulangi ya Pembe, an uncle, was a renowned comedian from Zaire (DR Congo).

Their appeal across East Africa is massive and their hit song Butu na Moyi has been jokingly called "Mobutu na Moi", in reference to the former presidents of DR Congo and Kenya.

Makoma has established itself as one of the most successful gospel groups from Africa, winning a best African group Kora award and performing to big crowds all around the world. Nathalie Makoma has two solo albums to her credit.

Some of their hit songs are Naleli, Na Nzambe te, Bomoyi te (No Jesus No Life), Moto Oyo, Natamboli, Nzambe Na Bomoyi, Mokonzi Na Bakonzi, Bana, Nasengi, Tolingana, Bolingo, Ezali Mawa
