African children's choir
They may go unnoticed as we jam to kwaito, soukouss, highlife and bongo flava, but the African Children's Choir is a strong presence whose mission we all need to be in support of. Made up of the most precious of faces and the most delicate of voices, the choir comprises of young African children aged between 7 and 11. Many of them have lost a parent or two to famine and disease, some are HIV positive orphans. They speak different languages and are from various countries around the continent, but they have united in one voice to represent and raise awareness to the issues concerning AIDS orphans from all over Africa. They were recently featured in the "Blood Diamond" movie's soundtrack. They have shared stages with personalities such as Miriam Makeba, Thandiswa Mazwai, Josh Groban, Wyclef Jean, Michael W. Smith to name a few, and have been successful in raising significant funds towards supporting and educating their brothers and sisters throughout the continent.

Like their website says : They are Africa's future!

You and I are Africa's present. What are YOU doing to alleviate the AIDS pandemic in the African continent? The struggle continues. Let's fight with love, education and Africanism.

excellent blog entry!
their voices are so heavenly and majestic eh, the choir directors are doing some really great work. It's nice to see kids from all over the continent come together for such a cause.

There's also this choir that I love very much, called the Watoto children's choir. Watoto is Swahili for children so a bit of tautology there :-)
Check out some videos.

Here's their website
The choir is part of a foundation - Watoto foundation and here's something from their mission page:

"That's what Watoto is all about. It's our mission, our purpose and our passion. Since 1992, Watoto has been rescuing orphans from a hopeless life on the streets. More than just food and shelter, we focus on the total development of the child. The specific goal is to care for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of every child by providing food, shelter, education, health care, family life and family values. We believe that these children will make a lasting impact upon the nation of Uganda."

The Watoto children's choir is great, anything that brings a smile to my face is medicine to my spirit :)
I feel bad for my (future)children, they will have to do some singing for me every night neh. They better have angelic voices.

Check out an interview Museke.com had with Omega Bugembe Okello, who was once a member of this choir and is pursuing a solo career at the moment. Her album is called Kiwomera Emmeeme which means "it is sweet to the soul".
