From the studio to airplay, who gets heard? - Tinny's Now I know
So after getting excited by NeezBuck's hot Letter to Ghana track with Derek Diggs (Stars of the Future Season 1 fame), I wanted more tracks on which he featured on. One was Heated up by Irene and Jane, which has a pretty nice video and is getting great airplay in Ghana. He also gave me a track he and Derek Diggs (K.O) did with Tinny (one of the more established Ghanaian musicians) called 'The way you wind'. I listened to track a number of times but I wasn't feeling that track as much as the other two but I felt it had the potential to sell. I never heard the song on Ghanaian radio but I heard a song strikingly similar also by Tinny featuring Samini. It didn't only get airplay, its video has been praised far and wide and is making waves on MTVBase Africa.
Tinny is probably the most recognised Ga rapper in Ghana. People like Shilo have tried to challenge him (led to some beef) and he's had some back and forth words with Buk Bak which were not so cool. Tinny is like the Ga version of Samini, he's featured on countless hit songs; he adds spice to a track. His debut album, Makola Kwakwe, was very successful and probably the first full rap album in Ga to gain national acclaim. I think he was also the first to make four music videos tied to a single album in Ghana at one time (Kojo Antwi did that eventually). His second album, Akwei Polo, had some great tracks but didn't get the same reviews. His third album, Kaabu ame, is gaining recognition on the back of popular singles like Now I know and is bound to mount him near the top of the hiplife genre.
What interests me is how Tinny made a song with NeezBuck and Derek Diggs, and just like many other songs stayed in the studio but the idea, lyrics and beat of the song created another song which features Samini and Richie. Did NeezBuck and Derek get served a raw deal? It makes me wonder, who wrote the song, who pays for the time that goes into making a song, how much does an artiste compensate another to feature on his song? Can anyone help answer some of these questions?
Read the lyrics and listen to the song for 'The way you wind' here. The video for 'Now I know' is below. Note the similarities in the song.
The songs themselves are relatively r-rated and judging by the treatment meted out to the Aben wo ahas, Koyonsos, Asee hos, and Lindas of yesteryears, I don't expect this song to run for many awards. We'll see how far 'Now I know' goes.
