There are African songs and there are AFRICAN songs.
Some songs are classics, known from country to country and when you go to an African party, people from various places in the continent know and dance to it.
Some are Vul'indlela, Umqombothi, Malaika, Sweet Mother and Premier Gaou.
What are some others?

I know it doesnt meet the standard requiremens for "classic" yet, but I am predicting that African Queen by 2face Idibia is fast becoming one of those AFRICAN songs. We can only wait and see if our children (scary thought) and childrens children (even scarier) will appreciate it as much as we do right now.
:-)
How old does a song have to be before it is considered a classic?
Cuz I will say African Queen is a classic already and surely stand the test of time.
Other songs from recent memory that I think are continental classics are Karolina by Awilo Longomba, Ninanoki by Nameless, and Different colours, different people by Lucky Dube
Meanwhile, Sweet mother and Vul'indlela are definitely continental classics
