Channel O Music Video Award Winners 2007
So the Channel O Spirit of Africa music video awards came on last night and there are a lot of surprises!
First among them is that none of the winners are from South Africa, which hosted the awards at the Johannesburg City Hall.
The Channel O awards are pretty much Africa's version of the MTV Video Music Awards so it is kind of a big deal. It features videos and musicians from all over Africa (especially younger ones) but Francophone Africa, Northern Africa and Central Africa did not get much love this year. Hmm.
For now, fans of the following winners can celebrate :-)

First of all, that no Mzantsi song won is just a damn shame, not when I think this past year has produced some lekker lekker music from Zola, Kabelo, Mafikizolo, Malaika and others. With some pretty dope vids too! I'm also sad that Samini didnt get his award either. Best Kwaito should never go to anything but Kabelo! It is written in the stars! Hehehe...anyway, congrats to Namibia, this is definitely reason to celebrate.
They say all's fair in love and war, right? Was definitely excited that Sinzia won the vid of the yr cos I agree! That vid is a cut above the rest. When I first saw it I was addicted immediately. hehe.
And of course, this seems to be a great year for our Naija brothers and sisters, if there is anything beyond cloud 9, be on it now!
Congrats to D'Banj and P-Square. :-D

Me, I don't understand these Channel O awards. Some of the videos featured came out way before 2007, what is the calendar year for this thing again? One big surprise if you asked me is how 2Face Idibia is missing from the nominations. Granted, he's there with Jimmy Jatt for Stylee but he's the MOBO award winner for goodness sake, he deserves a nomination. I understand this is the music video awards so we should be judging based on the music videos and not the popularity of the song. However, 'If love is a crime' should have gotten a nomination unless of course it was never shown on Channel O :-D
To the awards, Nameless had to win for Sinzia even though D'Banj would have been worthy too. I don't know too much about the nominees for best female video, but I think Dama do bling was a worthy winner as well. I have an issue with the best newcomer award. Channel O, ebe like you never see the Faze Alone remix video o! Faze is not a newcomer o. I don't think the Dogg is a newcomer either, he has a rivalry with Gazza that even dates a couple of years. I would have gone for L'vovo on this one.
Time is of the essence people. Was it the Bizzy Body original that was nominated or the remix? Close call between that and O tswa kae, but I would dare say that P-Square is probably more popular in Africa compared to Mafikizolo. I haven't seen most of the nominee vids for best dance video but I was rooting for DJ Sbu. How could Peter Miles win the dancehall award over EABC and Samini? Ugandans, please tell me something I don't know. This award should have gone to Samini, ask MTVBase. Oh, Channel O and MTVBase are competitors. Ma bad.
The R&B category was a tough one. Lizha James was a big winner last year so maybe that helped swing it her way. Am surprised Danny K or Tumi didn't win this one though. Now to the most controversial award - a Namibian winning an award in a genre that is South-African through and through. Can you imagine Jua Cali winning the award for best Bongo Flava or Kaysha winning for best Coupe Decale or some Ivorien artiste winning for best hiplife? Kabelo should have won best kwaito but hats off to Gazza, he must be something special and of international repute.
I guess Dama do Bing just had to win Best African Southern but it would have been nice (5 chances, 0 wins) to give this one to Hip Hop Pantsula. Where from these Indispensables? Y'all must be buff, taking the Best African West award from Samini, D'Banj, Jimmy Jatt (2Face Idibia). Congrats to Mensa for the nomination too. What is the criteria for these awards? voting? Did the Kenyans share the votes for the Best African East to allow all the Tanzanians to vote Juma Nature to the win?
Still haven't seen the Metlholo video but I really think the best hip-hop video should have gone to Jimmy Jatt for Stylee. I simply love the video, definitely one of the best all year. Are the special effects in the Koldproduk video the snow? Better be, because I am not ready for snow in Africa or the World Cup in 2010. I hate snow but I was feeling that Hush video o! D'Banj winning the award ain't bad tho.
The nominees for the best director and video of the year were the same. Stylee should have been a nominee as well as Sinzia. One of those is my video of the year. I like EABC but I don't think their Kube video was that special. D'Banj should have won this one.
And what's up with no South African winning any award? Was there something wrong with the voting system? Or the many South Africans all shared the 'vote' :-D
Channel O needs to be more specific about how they nominate these people, cos some of these nominees....
Their site doesn't make it clear how much weight they put on each factor, whether it is weighted more heavily on the quality of the video, popularity, frequency of airplay...we need some info, people. Things have been haywire since Candy Litchfield left (Miss Swaziland 2002, who took the 2001 title from me).
So I agree that 2face should have been in there, granted he walked away with what, 2 or 3 awards the previous year? Then again, the majority of his grass2grace vids were late.
As for the Kube video .... um, no comment. Besides the one that it is not a good video.
I guess winners were judged mostly on votes? Where was Mzantsi meanwhile? And as for P Square and Mafikizolo... I may have to disagree with u on that one, Chale, but it is a debate for another day. I will criticize South Africans, though, for getting too comfortable with their wide audience nationally that they become too lax in the international scene. The good side is Mzantsi artists know they get plenty plenty support from home. Im talking all-kwaito, all-house clubs and parties. kanye west may be selling at musica, but I will guarantee: u go to a party, u have to find Mafikizolo, DJ Sbu and meat. :)
We need more Brenda Fassies! African artists who will dare break the bounds of borders, appealing to 3 generations in any country!
I guess we will remain confused about the criteria. 2Face's great videos did come late - If love is a crime and My love (both my Phamous People :-D). For instance and No shaking would not have gotten him any nominations.
I am not happy with this Kube thing, they could have gotten any other award but not best video.
About Mafikizolo and P-Square, maybe I said so because I am from West Africa and there are quite a number of Nigerians eh. Mafikizolo is definitely famous around the world but I will feel more young Africans know P-Square.
More Brenda Fassies indeed we need! 2Face is on his way tho to legendary status.
If it is my understanding that winners of the different categories were chosen by SMS voters then I do not understand the fuss around why some SA musos did not win. Their fans did not vote for them. PERIOD. Musicians from other countries have the full support of their fans and maybe the SA musos thought we still live in that era where we glorify everything that comes from South Africa.

About the awards...
P-Square winning over Kalibrados????
D'banj's video winning over Kold Produk's "Hush"- damn, Kold Produk made it snow in JHB in their video. The effects on that video were crazy sick! (sorry D'Banj, I love you and everything but Why Me was NOT a hotter vid than Hush)
Big up to Dama Do Bling- that chick is faya, i saw her perform in JHB a few weeks back and i had no regrets!
NO COMMENT ON THE KWAITO AWARD.
Why did Samini win nothing? That man is theeeee sheeeeet!
It is not hard to imagine the reasons the best kwaito award went to a namibian. south africans are too laxed and maybe not just namibians thought that it was one of the best kwaito videos.about the best male video big ups to nameless quite agood song. also big ups to all the winners
yeah i was shocked to see de indispensables win over dbanj and the rest, but they deserve it because their music is quality.put it side by side you will know real music.'' i love you'' is a classic the boys rock.
Its becomin evident that namibian artist are serious, im impressed by by these two guys (Gazza and The Dogg), no wonder they both won in their respective categories.
have nothing much to say but just want to concgradulate the two guys. looking foward to suport them.
The 'I love you' video is not that bad. Maybe we sometimes think of the awards as a popularity contest (wait, is it not - the die was cast using votes) so people felt more popular musicians like 2Face or Samini should have won. Congrats to De Indispensables once again and Grafton Entertainment.
Seems Cinderella is a popular name for African songs these days, De Indispensables have their own version, watch the video
PS: Namibian music oyeee!
YEAH! Go Namibia! That Mokassie song and video rocks! And Baby don't go gives you a high; it's just off the hook! Way to go Gazza and the Dogg! We're so proud of you!
Rachel in the USA
those guys are the best things in Naija right now love them. they are a big assest
big up De Indispensables
My shout out goes to my country artists SCAR and ACID for making our country proud. Not so long ago, Botswana was always undermine and termed as the "under dogs" in the music industry. These two has proved a point, competing against names like HHP, DJ Cleo. There is so much talent here in Botswana.
can you guys tell us more about this talent from Botswana? It's been tough looking for videos and audios from Scar, Acid and the rest. If we can't find stuff, it helps the "underdog" status, don't you think so?
I found this video using a song by SCAR
Mokasie lyrics have been posted, I really love the song and the video is great too.
Need to congretulate all winners,,,,,especially Gazza (Mokasie). Honestly speaking the song and video (Gazza - Mokasie) shines over the South African songs nominated. I know they'r big stars but if something shines, then it shines (Mokasie).
I understand guys like 'Arthur Mafokate' are complaining over the award being won by a non-South African,,claiming Kwaito is purely South African. Well i think thats a shame...co'z i'd like to think of it as being 'international'. Start thinking outside the BOX and accept your competition. Thats a good thing.
So big ups to Gazza and to all other winners.
It's not hating on Namibia or anything, nor is it saying that South Africa should always win best Kwaito just because Kwaito was born there, it is just the simple fact that standing against Dubula, one of Southern Africa's best in 07, Mokassie should not have won that award. And that is my humble opinion :-). I had never heard the song on the airwaves and I will keep believing that it was a matter of votes in the end. Kabelo should have won that award hands down.
Also, I feel like Mokassie is a cheap copy of an integration of Zola's Yizo Yizo soundtrack songs, and Trompies. However, that is also my humble opinion, having followed Kwaito for so long.
Nonetheless, CONGRATS! May Kwaito keep diffusing into many cultures and bring good rewards :)
That's why other African musicians did so well and are doing so well in South Africa anyway - see D'Banj and Samini and Jose Chameleone.
Wasn't Arthur complaining recently about not getting a Metro FM award nomination? Hmm. Anyway, Mokasie is a great song but I really thought Dubula would win that one. I think the whole scenario with no South African winning a Channel O music award and then the Kwaito award didn't go down well with too many people.
I want Yizo Yizo too!

Winning the award
its every ones light to say what they feel.yah but i to my personal point of view music is just like a ball if you did not hold it well it will go to others.i thank all the people who received the awards and i believe this awards will motivate them to work extra more hard because they made us proud.i also want to tell other fans that some time we dont vote for our artist and once they lost we start to blame artist an madias which i believe its not fair.
my i also give a special thankx to south africa for sharing what they have with the rest of africa and i wish to see more african artist joined together and give us what we deserve.
i would also like to thank THE DOGG and GAZZ for achiving that stage of winning the channel o music award and may they keep up their good work.....
may i thank you for appretiatig what our two boyz done (THE DOGG & GAZZ). i believe you will support them in their music. lets buy original cd.
i am excited that my man nameless won for sinzia, he's the best
he better come up with some hit songs soon, for our parties and jams!
Wahu is keeping him busy!
Kwaito was born in SA......no comment about! But aka GAZLAM won the best kwaito category........no surprise to that! The BIG catz lost to a minor......it isnt shame!
When a MASTER is being hammered by its TRAINEES.......it isnt a SIN!
BUT at the end of a fight the MASTER is unconditionaly happy....good thing!
Just like Gazza scooping the award.....he was also unconditionaly inspired by the BIG catz......this is true....ask him.....the Mafokate,The kabhelo...etc!
Infact, letz face it........agree with me that, young ones are a mess of all things nowadays.....just start naming...start at home and then....in sports,in politic,in relationships,.....and why not in music industry?.....they rule the world n das it!
im out...i hate young ones....but i like them cos the have good innovations!
