D'Banj - MTV Best African ActAfter weeks of debating and voting for the MTV Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards, we finally have a winner. D'Banj, da koko master from Nigeria, edged out Samini (Ghana), Jose Chameleone (Uganda), Hip Hop Pantsula (South Africa) and Jua Cali (Kenya) for the award at the ceremony held at OlympiaHalle in Munich, Germany on Novermber 1. He succeeds South Africa's Freshlyground in what may be the biggest award an African musician could win these days and countryman Tuface Idibia who won the maiden edition in 2005. Congratulations to Oladapo Oyebanjo aka Skibanj.

D'Banj must be sitting somewhere asking 'why me o', why did he win this prestiguous award over the other contestants who also had equal shots at the title. It is without a doubt that D'Banj was one of the biggest musicians in Africa in late 2006 and 2007, earning a nomination for best African musician at the Music of Black Origin Awards in the UK (finally lost out to Tuface Idibia), winning countless major awards in Nigeria and gaining more silverware at the recent Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video awards. He is a worthy winner.

I figure votes counted a lot in judging the winner and of course D'Banj has the millions of Nigerians backing him as well as kokolets all over the world. You can make some pretty strong arguments why some of the other contestants should have won this, but this was a keenly contested race which am sure went to the wire.

In all honesty, I didnt think D'Banj would win this one, it WAS a tough pool and thinking now in retrospect, any of the musicians he was up against could have won this one. Nonetheless he does deserve to win, and kudos to Nigeria for producing such supexcellentia artists. D'Banj was a big hit in Swaziland and South Africa over the past festive season, with "Why me" being on frequent DJ playlists and even most downloaded ring tones.

I hope he will take a big hint and capitalize on his mega fame to keep releasing some goody goodies! Hmmm now I MUST wonder, what will come after Why me!!! Whats the next party song from D'Banj after he tests us and throws us on beds with hands on the walls. Can you wait? I cant!

:-D

And just for kicks : Lets keep watching the Why me vid :-)

Hehe, D'Banj was indeed a huge hit across the continent. I think he was even bigger in Nigeria, Nigerians were and are still infatuated with the 'koko' (from his Tongolo songs) and Why me followed that. Why me is very very catchy and I actually think D'Banj won best African artiste at the last Ghana Music Awards. And as for Why me ruling the ringtone market in South Africa, that says a lot for him.

I am eager to hear if D'Banj had more votes than everybody and if that is what tilted it in his favour. Rumour has it that HHP was leading him as the D-Day neared. Concerning the international appeal, D'Banj is not really a hip hop or RnB musician, he's considered more Afrobeat, his style is kinda unique.

Here's another video featuring the Kokomaster and Wande Coal off the Mo Hits (Don Jazzy) compilation album, Song is called 'Move your body'

I dont think he deserves to win, because this is not a great songer og even the singer behind it... this song does not present anything from Africa.. anyway the vote has been counted... and good luck....

the song does not present anything from Africa? That's a serious statement to make o, Mr/Mrs Anonymous. D'Banj's style is supposed to be Afrobeat/Fuji/etc and while it is not really Fela Kuti or King Sunny Ade or Sonny Okosun, it's not R. Kelly or Ray Charles or James Brown either.

Who do you think should have won by the way?

My home boy Dapo as made us proud he as done it again, and i think he really deserved the award and cos he is a Nigerian he would surely make us proud. Big ups to dbanj for the award.
