What's Up With The Current Trend in Hiplife, Crunk?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •

Amanfuor! I hope i'm not the only dude on this forum seeing this trend of Crunk music infiltrating our favourite hiplife genre. Let me first admit the fact that i'm really impressed with the quality of crunk they are putting out so far. If anybody has been following my postings, they will come to a realization that i'm not a big fun of hiphop let alone crunk hiphop. Not to say i never liked hiphop before but i changed with maturity, that's all. All the same, i like to give credit where it's due. Below are some of the Crunk hiplife music i have watched on either Ghanamusic.com or youtube which i think deserves some recognition.

Okyeame Kwame, The Rap Doctor-"Woso Rmx"
The latest one i just watched which i must admit prompted me to get off my bed and start writing this article is that of our own respected hiplife artist, Okyeame Kwame, the Rap Doctor. I was more impressed with the content of the song itself and a little credit to Okyeame kwame for his delivery of flow. Features Richie. Check out the link for the video

Mobile Phone Boys- "Wone hwan"
For those who are not familiar with these group, they are protege of Reggie Rockstone. Their first album was not so successful so i guess they've taken a different direction this time and given this crunk hiplife thing a try. Not so bad. Wicked lyrics and tight beats.

Edem ft. Kwaw Kesse & Sarkordie- "Teva (Bouges)"
Edem is new to the game and nobody know too much about him but i believe this track will be classic hit when it comes to crunk hiplife due to the remarkable flow of Sarkordie and Kwaw Kesse. Watch out for Sarkordie ya'all. The guy is a force to reckon with. I must give it to Hammer of last two too and Edem for the Ayigbe delivery. The beat is a heavy hit.

Disastrous- "I Rep Ghana"
Dont know anything at all about this guy but i guess he also deserves some kind of recognition because of his patriotic motive. Unfortunately, most of the Ghanaian artist leaving outside Ghana barely gets any kind of recognition.

Quata ft. Paa Dogo- "Baby"
This song by itself is not really Crunk hiplife but i just couldn't resist the temptation to add him on my list. I have always admired Quata's rapping abilities when nobody recognized him but he really took me by surprise with this track. The delivery is tight and the rhythm is like no other.
Watch the Baby video here

Nasty Tay ft. Ex-Doe- "Obolo"
Another non Crunk hiplife that also deserves some recognition. The beat is so alive that i have to give credit to Cold Eye records in Dansoman. This shows that Ex-Doe is still a force to reckon with.

4x4- "Hot Girls.Com"
Folks this is the track that started all the Crunk hiplife trend going on at the moment. 4x4 still holding it down after all these years in the hiplife game and has even started a trend of their own. Kudos to them.

C Moe- "Oye Sika Baa"
This young lad who currently lives in Italy is doing his best with this track. The video is cool. I'm sure the young ones will really love him.

A.S.E.M- "Gimme Blow"
If you don't know this is the guy making all the noise in the trend of Crunk Hiplife. Listen to his lyrics well and you will come in terms with what's on the lips of all or most Ghanaian youth. I wonder why he doesn't have a video for this hot track yet. Listen to the song here

General Shapiro- "Bule(Respect)
Folks! I left out this guy yesterday because i just couldn't recollect his name. I love this song so much not only it's delivered in my own Ga language but the beat is wicked and the guy can flow. We've got to give credit also to AJINGO AJINGO who made the beat. No article has been writing on this guy yet so i can't tell you much. I have been wondering if he is one of Ghanaian artist living abroad who comes home to drop a hit and goes back like 2tuff did. Link to video

Kla-la-"Nyehe Yefeo"
I know this track is not a crunk hiplife but it's the latest addition to Ghanamusic.com music videos which i think deserves some kind of recognition. I'm enjoying the authenticity of the whole song not only because i'm a Ga but also it has some traditional feel to it. All credits go to SUGARTONE for the wicked beat. For those not familiar with the GA language,
"KLA-LA" means handkerchief.

More to come later but please don't hesitate to add to it if you know of any good Crunk hiplife that i missed on this list. Let's have a kuul discussions about the above videos. What y'all think and who is the best so far to you? And the most important question is, do you think this is just another phase in hiplife or Crunk hiplife is here to stay? If you ask me, i think it's really fun for the younger hiplife fans but i honestly don't think it will sell as much. Before you criticize my judgement think about this... Older folks actually buy hiplife albums and young folks download songs.

I hope Mega Don comes to bless us with some knowledge on this subject soon. I feel what you are saying Ras Nii, hiplife is evolving. We still have the raglife tracks, the jama type tracks, those with the adowa beats, and the hip hop type stuff too. The whole world is seeing some kind of crunk, so why not hiplife? I just think the hiplife artistes are trying out new things and are trying to make more complete albums. See case in point, Samini - he had a ballad, R&B, hiplife, reggae, dancehall songs, all on one album. Even Lil Wayne did 'Lollipop'.

Thanks for the songs you pointed out. I love a lot of the tracks and some are becoming major hits, especially the Woso remix. I feel Disastrous on I rep Ghana too. I think we should bottle hiplife into being one particular type of music and understand that the styles will vary. You will agree that even the sound engineers in Ghana are all trying to be different, so are the rappers trying to carve niches for themselves, so we will continue to see some more crunk. Look at how 5Five was successful with African girls.

I was very surprised with Quata on his 'Baby' track. Didn't see him making such a song. Hotgirls.com was the pioneer and I believe even with its bad lyrics, the song will be a classic in years to come. It's nice to see Hammer back with Edem, that track is hot, and I pray that Edem (for the love of Ewe music) makes it big.

I think the best song is Woso remix, followed by Give me blow, Bougez, and I rep Ghana. As for Asem, Kwaw Kese and Sarkodie, they are three of the hottest cats in the game now. I don't think there will be the creation of a new genre, Raglife couldn't do it and I don't see crunk hiplife doing it. Asem told me in an interview that he's not going to classify himself as hiplife (he said Ghanaian hip hop), many of the musicians are doing that too.

PS: Sakodie is the truth! I've been catching him on Kasahare Level on Adom FM with Dr. Duncan, massacre-ing people on rap battles! You should check out his mixtpaes on his Myspace

Me nye wo den! by Howls Of Lords - dat is 1 heavy track but it mixes the rnb style crunk i.e ciara with hip hop you can definately see the crunk influence nonetheless and is great to dance to. Should have been a much bigger track

cabum is de fastest rapper in ghana!

Chale's picture

Who is Cabum? Can you give us more information? You mean to say he's faster than Stone, Kunta Kinte (both of Bradez), Kochoko and Sarkodie? That Burbon fly guy too is good.

Too many sick rappers in the gh rap game at the moment
