Nominees for the MAMAs are chosen as follows
All artists whose videos have been played on MTV base in previous 12 months are eligible (this amounts to several hundred artists from all over the continent)
MTV sends a list of all artists (see the pages of some of the artistes who will get nominated eventually listed on Museke.com) who are eligible to members of a voting 'academy' across Africa to ask them to vote for their favourite artists/tracks/videos etc. These votes are collated and feed into the nominations short list per category (5 nominees per category)
The nominations are released on or around 7 October and consumers make the final decision in all voting categories; voting closes on 18 November.
There will be 13 separate music award categories including
1. ARTIST OF THE YEAR
2. BEST MALE
3. BEST FEMALE
4. BEST GROUP
5. BEST NEW ACT
6. BEST ALTERNATIVE *
7. BEST HIP-HOP *
8. BEST R&B *
9. VIDEO OF THE YEAR
10. BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE
11. MAMA LEGEND AWARD
12. MY VIDEO AWARD
13. LISTENERS CHOICE AWARD…
* Categories that include both international and African artists.
The “Listeners Choice” Award will be decided by radio listeners across Africa.
All categories are open to African artists except the My Video Award which be awarded for a viewer created video. The Best Alternative, Best Hip-hop and Best R&B categories are open to international artists as well as African artists.

I've been excited about the MTV Africa Music Awards ever since rumours started to spread about it when D'Banj won the Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
I know the nominations don't come out for another month but I am going to take a stab at predicting the nominees :-) I understand the nominees should have had their videos played on MTVBase to be eligible. I am praying that the Francophone Africa artistes would not be left out.

This is debatable since this is the first awards ever. I'll stick with groups that came out within the last year.

I guess we'll have to look at the Big Brother performances to judge this one. I heard Jose Chameleone and Tic Tac both rocked the house.
11. MAMA LEGEND AWARD
I have a feeling Lucky Dube may take this one. Dark horses include Angelique Kidjo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Femi Kuti and Youssou Ndour
12. MY VIDEO AWARD
13. LISTENERS CHOICE AWARD…
Both of these awards are probably decided by fans. If I could create a video for the My video award - how about a video about elections and politics in Africa for 2Face Idibia's "Ebe like say" song. For the Listeners choice award - I'll give that to 2Face as well for 'See me so'.
I have not heard about 9ice being on MTV Base so he may not get nominations but he will deserve every one of them.
I may be totally off when the real nominations come out but hey, join me with your own predictions.
D'Banj for artist and male artist of the year, Sasha for best female and P-Square for group of the year. The first MTV awards in Africa belongs to Naija, the awards are being held in Nigeria, don't forget that.

of all the artiste u all nominated, none of them is beta than my guy faze. but no problem u can only delay destiny. destiny can neva be changed.which of there song beat originality. this normally happen in every award have been experiencing but i dont believe mtv can do this.but no mata our long you nominate faze is still the bomb .is my role model and apart from that i will always love him.
