The awards ceremony was held in Abuja, Nigeria on Saturday, November 22 where the winners were announced. Winners were selected by fans sending text messages, said Alison Reid, a spokeswoman for MTV Networks Africa.

There were performances by Nigeria's Seun Kuti, South Africa's Jozi as well as the Nigerian football superstar, Jay Jay Okocha. Wait, for real? Okocha? What did you do? Juggle a football? Seems like that's what he did. The USA's Kelly Rowland also performed with Nigeria's D'Banj.

The most poignant moment of the night came when MTV paid homage to two of Africa’s most beloved and influential music giants including ‘MAMA Africa’, Miriam Makeba, who passed away earlier in November. Another African music great spotlighted was legendary Afro Beat star Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose seminal track ‘Army Arrangement’ was performed by his youngest son and standard bearer, Seun Anikulapo Kuti, and Fela’s Egypt 80. Seun Kuti subsequently accepted the inaugural MAMA Legend Award in honour of his late father.

Celebrated awards host, DJ and broadcaster, Trevor Nelson maintained a firm hand on the tiller, continuing MTV award tradition by participating in a number of humorous skits, including an exchange with Nigerian superstar footballer JJ Okocha, while cutting a dash in multiple costume changes including traditional Nigerian attire tailored specially for him.

Performers at the MAMAs included 9ice, Asa, Cassette, Seun Anikulapo Kuti & Egypt 80, HHP, Jozi, P Square, Kelly Rowland, D’Banj, Flo Rida, The Game, Jua Cali, Naeto C and Ikechukwu.

Guest presenters at the Awards include 9ice, DJ Cleo, Goldfish, Sasha, Loyiso, Dama do Bling, Zonke, Samini, Wahu, Noni Gasa,JJ Okocha, East Africa Bashment Crew and MTV VJ Cynthia. DJ Kofi was on the spot as the resident DJ for the show.

Congrats to the winners, the nigerians really deserve the attention, their music is really good....i don't wanna sound like a nag but i feel like Lusophone-Africa is greatly ignored in this type of things, we make good music but we are ignored by other africans, we make good music in Angola, Mozambique and Cabo verde however no one pays attention to us, I feel that we should have our own Lusophone-African MTV awards or that we should have some type of big award to caters to Lusophone africans because we really hustle and wor hard to make good music. This award focuses more on the anglophone-africans like nigerians, ghanaians, kenyans south africans etc etc. We seriously need to get our own big award event so that we can encourage our own artists . Other than that, congratulations to the winners

It's worth mentioning that Seether is from South Africa. Thus Alicia Keys (from the US) is the only non-African award winner.

Real talk er'one had to be there@ the velodrome in Abuja-Nigeria. It was the illest show ever! Kelly Rowland the best lady I've ever met damn! She's an angel! I'm Nigerian but with some fairness I must discredit 9ice 4 the award of the best hiphop. I mean put him in a seperate category like best new act, listeners' choice or something. Not with HHP or THE GAME and expect to grab it. Other than that, nothing.
