What I learnt from Kiki Banson

Kiki banson becca acheampong ekb records u lied to meOn Tuesday 11th March, I had the opportunity of interviewing Becca. The interview would be transcribed for y’all Museke.com fans soon but while waiting for the interview to start, I hanged around her producer, Kiki Banson. Below is some of the info I picked from him and a conversation he was having with some friends. Real talk, son.

Kiki Banson’s background is in music. He has produced Hugh Masekela, Genevieve Nnaji (No more album), among others. Becca is his first Ghanaian artiste. Becca’s album was released for a month in late 2006 and then actual promotion started in August 2007.

The first day Becca came to EKB studios, it was the first time she had stood in front of a microphone to sing. That day, ‘u lied to me’ was done in 6 hours and that’s what is used till today. Kiki wanted her to go to the TV3 Mentor show for the exposure. She was green, and had no training in music. It was an opportunity to go and polish up. Kiki wrote most of the songs.

People say Becca charges a lot to play or perform at shows, but the truth is she plays with 10/11 people who all need to be paid. Becca works very hard at being successful. All over the world, all the top musicians invest a lot into their profession. Usher goes through a lot to get the kind of body he has, the major artistes all have voice training, etc. Apart from the old boys, most Ghanaian musicians cover the mouth of the microphone. Are they scared of the microphone? Our musicians need the adequate training. Rebecca Acheampong does 3 miles every day (jogging).

Kiki has a band of 5 girls called Asantewaa. The oldest girl is 23, the others are 21, 20, n two 19 year olds. They’ll be coming out later this year. Kiki brought them together, they originally wanted to record as solo artistes. They were sent to South Africa for grooming. They are a remake of Osibisa in a modern way. They sing in English and Twi, etc. They are very feminine and very lively.

Also, watch out for one Natalie (would probably be known by a different name when she comes out). She’s also in the EKB camp and is a talented singer. Apparently Quincy Jones and Hugh Masekela even know that she is the truth.

More respect to you, Kiki Banson. We need more people like you in the music industry. And congratulations to Becca and EKB for the eight or so nominations at the upcoming Ghana music awards.
