Viviane - Queen of Mbalax

Viviane Chichid (formerly known as Viviane Ndour) is often referred to as the Queen of Mbalax. Mbalax is a Senegalese music genre. She is well known for her blends of Mbalax, R&B, pop and hip hop. She is a Kora nominated artiste who has toured worldwide. She recently featured on Mokobe's hit called Safari.

She got her big break in 1993 when she joined Youssou Ndour's band, Super Etoile, She featured on many Youssou hits; Seven Seconds, Wommat, etc. She is not Youssou's sister, but until recently she was married to his brother, Boubacar.

In 1997, she went solo and enjoyed a successful career, eventually getting her own band called Jolof band. You all know Jollof rice is from Senegal right? Right.

She has also remixed a lot of popular American songs. Her track, Goor fit, is a cover of the late Aaliyah's Are you that somebody. She also features one of Senegal's foremost rappers, PBS Radical, on Am fit which sounds like a Senegalese version of 50 Cent's P.I.M.P. She must have really been feeling Fiddy, as another track on which she features King Massassi and Tata Pound called Obibolo uses the P.I.M.P beat.
