soweto gospel choir south african music concertA week ago, I went to see the Grammy winning Soweto Gospel Choir perform at Stanford's Memorial Church. This is not just any choir, this is a Grammy Award winner born and bred in probably the most melodious corner of the world, Southern Africa. I was very excited to see them that I got lyrics to their songs which were not on Museke.com (yet) just so I could sing along and show them how much of a fan I am. Eventually, they didn't perform any of my top 3 SGC favorites but they gave a marvelous account of themselves. If you hear that they are coming to a venue near you, you should go see them too.

The Soweto Gospel Choir is in the midst of their "African Spirit" tour which comprises of 48 dates from early October at New York's Carnegie Hall till December 23 with a concert in the Disney Hall in Los Angeles. "African Spirit" is the name of their latest CD. "African Spirit" won the 2008 Grammy Award for best traditional world music, following their success in the same category in 2007 with their CD "Blessed."

African musicians and style of dressing - Mzbel

So Mzbel has apparently had enough criticism concerning her style of dressing on stage and music videos, etc so she has decided to change from the Western style to the 'African' way of dressing - stop wearing bikinis, etc.

She has decided to choose the 'dipo' style because her mother is a Krobo (this will probably be more for performances). Do a Google image search for 'dipo krobo' and see what Mzbel is talking about.
Well, maybe she is kidding, maybe she is not.

K'Naan and his collaborations

K'Naan has done a lot of collaborations. These include Mos Def, DeaD prez and Damian Marley on his Welcome to Jamrock tour session. He also collaborated with a certain Swahili rapper on one of my favorite songs, the African Way.

A lot of these musicians are cast in the conscious hip hop mold. He's breaking out and it would do justice for publicizing his music more. That's why I was excited to find out about this collaboration he did with Nelly Furtado.
Check out this video of a studio performace on "Going Away" with one of the hottest musicians today, Nelly Furtado
